Wall-oscillation conditions for drag reduction in turbulent channel flow

چکیده
The drag reduction properties of a turbulent channel flow modified by spanwise sinusoidal oscillations of the walls are investigated by direct numerical simulations. The work is based on the linear relation between the drag reduction and the parameter S, function of the maximum wall velocity and the period of the oscillation. This quantity, first determined by JI-Choi et al. (2002) and later studied by Quadrio and Ricco (2004), has been found through physical arguments pertaining to the action of the oscillating Stokes layer on the near-wall turbulence dynamics. The predictive potential of the scaling parameter is exploited to gain insight into the drag-reducing effects of the oscillating wall technique. The period of oscillation which guarantees the maximum drag reduction for a given maximum wall displacement is studied for the first time. The issue of the minimum intensity of wall forcing required to produce a non-zero drag reduction effect and the dependence of the drag reduction on the Reynolds number are also addressed. The drag reduction data available in the literature are compared with the prediction given by the scaling parameter, thus attaining a comprehensive view of the state of the art.

Turbulent Drag Reduction by Spanwise Wall Oscillations
The objective of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of wall oscillation as a control scheme of drag reduction. Two flow configurations are considered: constant flow rate and constant mean pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Fourier-Chebyshev spectral methods and the oscillation in sinusoidal form is enforced on the walls through boundary conditions for the sp...

In this study, the results of a direct numerical simulation of turbulent drag reduction in a channel flow by hydrophobic coating at a nominal shear Reynolds number of Reτ = 180 are reported. Slip condition is imposed on the lower wall whereas the upper wall has no-slip condition. For this purpose, the use is made of a numerical simulation of three-dimensional, time-dependent Navier-Stokes e...

متن کاملSuboptimal control of turbulent channel flow for drag reduction
Two simple feedback control laws for drag reduction are derived by applying a suboptimal control theory to a turbulent channel flow. These new feedback control laws require pressure or shear-stress information only at the wall, and when applied to a turbulent channel flow at Reτ = 110, they result in 16–22% reduction in the skin-friction drag. More practical control laws requiring only the loca...
